Why Do Men Need Breast Reduction?

The majority of breast reductions are for women, yet, it isn’t uncommon for men to seek this procedure as well. The main reason being, they also suffer from an increase in breast tissue because of weight gain, and hormonal conditions such as an increase of estrogen and chromosomal issues.

This situation is as embarrassing for men, and they can have the same knock to their confidence as women can with their breast size and shape. The most significant confidence knock is down to men feeling they have lost some of their masculinity.

What Happens During Gynecomastia Correction Surgery?

The technical term for this procedure is reduction mammoplasty, and will focus on reducing the male breast size, then flattening and enhancing chest contours. If the male breasts have grown large because of excessive weight gain, they may be dropping to an extent the male areola may stretch.

If this is the case, Dr. Zuriarrain can surgically improve this by removing excess skin, and returning the nipple and areola into a natural position.

Under general anesthesia, there are two processes, which the surgeon can perform. If the underlying problem is fatty tissue, then small incisions are made and a thin cannula will be fed inside, and through suction, the excess fat will loosen and be removed from the body.

For extreme gynecomastia procedures, there will be an amount of glandular breast tissue and excess skin, which requires removal. In many cases, this may be required because of the positioning of the nipple and areola once the procedure is complete.

Dr. Zuriarrain always attempts to make incisions where they will be hidden in the natural contours of the male body once the procedure is over. However, in some cases, there is the likelihood there will be some minor scarring.

Male Breast Reduction Consultations

The same factors will come under discussion with Dr. Z between men as it does between women. He will need to understand the concerns and the aspirations of the procedure. He will also need to determine the man is a suitable candidate for the procedure.

Items that they discuss will include any previous surgery, medications, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco products, or any recreational drug use. One other area the doctor needs to know is if there, has there been any use of steroids?

After this, he will examine the male’s breasts, and take pictures. These will be the before shots, and he will also take the after shots once the procedure is complete.

Recovery from Male Breast Reduction

After the procedure, there will be swelling, redness and discomfort in the chest area. Patients are likely to feel tired after the procedure and should have another adult present for the first twenty-four hours in case of shortness of breath, chest pain or any unfamiliar heart beat rhythms.

For the first few weeks after the procedure, a compression garment will be advisable to help minimize swelling, and to help enhance the results. It will take two to three days of good rest after the procedure, and patients must adhere to the instructions given by either Dr. Zuriarrain or the staff in the Miami, FL clinic.

It is possible for men to return to work after five days, as long as they don’t exert themselves. Full recovery and undertaking regular activities is usually around three to four weeks after surgery.
