What are lip fillers?

Lip fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in your body that increases volume, adds shape to the tissues, and enhances the definition of the natural shape of your lips. The most common fillers for lip augmentation are Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Volbella XC, and Restylane, which are all injected the same way and give you similar results.

There are two types of lip fillers, temporary and permanent. Temporary fillers are by far the most popular choice and can be reversible. If you don't like how your lips look following a treatment, you can have an eraser enzyme, hyaluronidase, injected to disperse the particles and speed up how the fillers can be broken down. Permanent fillers are exactly what the name implies and not reversible. Dr. Z also offers lip fat grafting to provide permanent and natural results. Lip fat grafting can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or combined with your surgical procedure.

Lip Fillers FAQS

Am I a candidate for Lip Fillers or Lip Fat Grafting?

If you are looking to add volume to your lips and make them fuller, you are definitely a good candidate for a lip filler procedure. You should be in good physical health and have realistic expectations of what it can do for you and its outcome.

What are the risks with Lip Fillers or Lip Fat Grafting?

Since your lips are one of the most sensitive parts of your face, the most common side effects are minor bruising and swelling that can last for a few days. There is a possibility of an allergic reaction that can cause redness and itchiness and asymmetry. This is rare.

Lip fat grafting uses your own body fat to enhance the shape and volume of your lips. There is no risk of an allergic reaction. The results are considered long-lasting once the grafted fat survives.

When can I exercise after Lip Fillers or Lip Fat Grafting?

Wait at least a day or two to allow the swelling to go down.

What results will I see from Lip Fillers or Lip Fat Grafting?

The results of lip fillers can last up to a year. It all depends on how your body breaks down the filler. Expect the initial swelling to distort your results at first until it fades and your lips adapt to the new volume and resolve into their new fuller state after a few days.

The results of lip fat grafting are lasting. There will be an initial period of swelling that resolves over several weeks to a month. Not all of the fat that is grafted to the lips will survive. Once your swelling subsides and at least eight weeks have passed you will get a better idea of how much fat survived. At that point, the fat that has survived will provide a lasting result.

How many treatments will I need?

It depends on your type of lips. For example, it can take a few sessions to achieve a full but natural look with thin lips.
