Why Do Men Need Breast Reduction?

The majority of breast reductions are for women, yet, it isn’t uncommon for men to seek this procedure as well. The main reason being, they also suffer from an increase in breast tissue because of weight gain, and hormonal conditions such as an increase of estrogen and chromosomal issues.

This situation is as embarrassing for men, and they can have the same blow to their confidence as women can experience about their breast size and shape. The most significant reason for loss of confidence comes down to men feeling they have lost some of their masculinity.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a common condition in which the male breast tissue is enlarged. This condition is typically more prevalent in older men and teenage boys. Sometimes people assume it is a build-up of fat; however, this is not the case. The enlargement is the result of muscle tissue that grows larger than normal.

What causes Gynecomastia?

There are a variety of conditions that can cause Gynecomastia. In general, it happens when there is a reduction of the hormone testosterone and an increase in estrogen levels in the body. This imbalance can be caused by natural hormone changes in different stages of life, including adolescence and in older men, but is possible at any age. In addition, a wide variety of medications and several different chronic health conditions can cause gynecomastia.

What Happens During Gynecomastia Surgery?

The technical term for this procedure is reduction mammoplasty, which focuses on reducing the male breast size and then flattening and enhancing the chest contours. If the male breasts have grown large because of excessive weight gain, they may be drooping to an extent that the areola may stretch. If this is the case, Dr. Zuriarrain can surgically improve this by removing excess skin and returning the nipple and areola to a natural position.

Once you are asleep under general anesthesia, there are two processes, which the surgeon can perform. If the underlying problem is fatty tissue, then small incisions are made and a thin cannula is fed inside, and through liposuction, the excess fat will loosen and be removed from the body. For extreme gynecomastia surgery procedures, there will be an amount of glandular breast tissue and excess skin, which requires removal. In many cases, this may be required because of the positioning of the nipple and areola once the procedure is complete.

During your Gynecomastia Surgery in Miami, plastic surgeon, Dr. Zuriarrain, will always attempt to make incisions where they will be hidden in the natural contours of the male body once the procedure is over. However, in some cases, there is a likelihood of some minor scarring.

Recovery From Gynecomastia Surgery

After the procedure, there will be swelling, redness and discomfort in the chest area. Patients are likely to feel tired after the procedure and should have another adult present for the first twenty-four hours in case of shortness of breath, chest pain or any unfamiliar heart beat rhythms.

For the first few weeks after the procedure, a compression garment will be advisable to help minimize swelling, and to help enhance the results. You will need two to three days of good rest after the procedure, and Miami Gynecomastia Surgery patients must adhere to the instructions given by either Dr. Zuriarrain or the staff in the Miami, FL clinic.

It is possible for men to return to work after five days as long as they do not overexert themselves. Full recovery and undertaking regular activities are usually possible around three to four weeks after surgery.
